Job Summary

Basic
Summary:

In consultation with the veterinary and aniaml care staff, manage and implement the Animal Behavioral Management Program in accordance with regulatory expectations and professional standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:

  • For all species, ensure appropriate enrichments to the animals structural and social environments and provide opportunities for species-typical activities.
  • Work with the veterinary staff to assess/monitor colony behavioral health, and implement programs/treatments for animals needing special attention.
  • Oversee and coordinate the observation of animals and the reporting of behavioral abnormalities.
  • Perform behavioral assessments in response to reports of behavioral abnormalities.
  • Work with other departments to coordinate animal psychological/behavioral enrichment, including the acclimation and socialization of study animals.
  • Work closely with the veterinary and animal care staff to ensure proper animal care standards are maintained.
  • Monitor the ordering of fruit, enrichment foodstuffs and enrichment devices for the animals.
  • Manage the Behavioral Management Program budget.
  • Evaluate new enrichment devices and strategies for individually and socially housed animals.

Job Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • Education:
    Bachelor s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in Animal Science or related discipline.

  • Experience:
    3-5 years related technical experience in a GLP laboratory facility, including 2 years experience working with non-human primates. Experience supervising preclinical studies and staff in a research environment preferred. Experience in conduct of GLP nonclinical studies preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Certification/Licensure:
    LAT required; LATG preferred
  • Other:
    Knowledge of animal care and welfare standards as defined by AAALAC, USDA, IACUC and other regulatory agencies. Familiar with Animal Welfare Act. Computer literate. Ability to perform advanced level technical duties. Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines.
